Physical Education
Curriculum Intent and Implementation
The school aims, through its provision for sport, within and beyond the formal curriculum, to:
- develop in all students their intellectual, personal and physical skills, enhancing self-esteem and fostering co-operation, tolerance and independence in learning.
- enable all students to participate in both competitive and co-operative activities and experience a sense of enjoyment, purpose and fulfilment through team and individual involvement.
- foster links with sporting bodies and the local community, encouraging students to regard lifelong involvement in physical and sporting activity as an essential feature of a healthy lifestyle.
The school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities and has a strong sporting tradition. There are teams in all years for Netball, Football, Athletics, Gymnastics, Tennis and Rounders. Other activities done in combined age group teams are Badminton, Cricket, Cross-country, Water Polo, Rugby and Equestrian.
Clubs are held during the lunch time and include the aforementioned activities together with Fitness, Dance and Volleyball. Fixtures are played after school and, occasionally at weekends.
For many years, the school has won district, county, regional and national titles in Rounders, Cross-country, Athletics, Tennis, Netball, Cricket, Badminton and Gymnastics. Many Year 10-13 students coach teams and organise clubs for Year 7 and Year 8 students during the lunch hour.
There are several links with local sporting bodies and every effort is made to encourage students to participate in sport through the local clubs, as well as school. Every student has the opportunity to represent her House in any number of sporting events throughout the year. Our links with the District Primary Schools give our students the opportunity to officiate at several inter-school competitions from Years 7-13.

Key Stage 3
In Year 7, each student participates in five lessons per fortnight, honing their skills in basic core movement and developing an understanding of rules and tactics in a range of sports. In Years 8 and 9, students take part in four lessons per fortnight, learning to develop more sophisticated sporting techniques and challenging themselves in new and familiar sports. The focus is on setting and achieving their own personal bests as well as improving strategy in team sports.
Whether they are experienced at sports or wanting to try out something new, we are keen that students in Key Stage Three get involved in extra-curricular opportunities, such as those offered at lunchtimes in sports clubs, inter-form and inter-house competitions, and local and national fixtures.
Key Stage 4
Core PE
Each student will participate in 1 hour of Core PE each week, making a choice at the end of Year 9 as to which route they wish to follow throughout KS4. Options for Core PE include Competitive Games, which allows the students to do activities such as netball, badminton, and summer sports such as athletics, cricket and rounders. Less Competitive Games are also offered to students looking for a more relaxed environment where they will try out activities such as bench ball, dodgeball, and summer activities such as athletics, cricket and rounders. The third option is Fitness, enabling students to experience a variety of fitness-based activities.
GCSE PE
We follow the AQA Specification, which has two key elements: theory and practical skills. The course enables candidates to develop an appreciation of the relationship between physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, along with an understanding of and participation in a variety of activities. For the practical element of the course, they will undertake lessons in netball, badminton and athletics in school - with the option of participating in a 3-day indoor climbing residential. If students participate in other sporting activities outside of school and these feature on the specification these might also be used as evidence for their practical marks.
Key Stage 5
We follow the AQA Specification for Advanced Level PE, where you will have the opportunity to develop your passion for sports. The course builds on your experience from Key Stage 4 and GCSE to enhance your knowledge and increase your understanding of the factors that affect performance and participation in physical education. There are three academic sections in this specification: Section A covers topics such as Anatomy and Physiology; Section B, Psychological Principles; and Section C, Sport & Society and the Role of Technology. There is an expectation that you participate and compete in a sport outside of school in order for you to gain your practical marks for the Advanced Level PE course.
