Transitions

Transitions at any point present significant change for all children. Students with SEND needs can face further challenges therefore proactive management of these is vital to ensure a smooth handover of information and support to the next setting.

At KGGS we support students with their key transitions so that they can have a smooth induction to their next stage of learning this involves careful planning and clear communication between all stakeholders.

Year 6 to 7

To support students into the school our SEND team liaise with the feeder school to discuss support plans in place and the student’s needs. For the student themselves we provide opportunities for them to visit with their parents to familiarise themselves with the building and key members of staff who they will be working with. Additionally, all prospective Year 7 students can attend an induction day in the summer term.

Year 9 to 10

As part of their transition to KS4, all students at KGGS are given the opportunity to meet with subject teachers at the GCSE Options Evening, in addition to this some new subjects offer taster lessons that allow students to support students in making informed choices. All students are also met by tutors and/or the pastoral team during this time. SEND students are met with by the SEND team to discuss subject options viability to ensure the GCSE programme is fit for purpose for the individual. We have worked with students to create bespoke timetables in some cases that allow students to have mentored support within their school day to enable them to improve their academic attainment and as well as their holistic school experience.

Year 11 to 12

At KGGS we strive to support our learners to progress to pathways that they wish to pursue whether that is staying on for Sixth Form or exploring other routes such as apprenticeships, or other vocational routes. As part of this process all year 11 students are met by the SLT as well as their tutors for advice and support. In addition to this all year 11 students receive a careers advice interview which can help navigate them through their options. The SEND team also meet with Year 11 students over the course of the year to discuss their progress in their subjects as well as their support plans to ensure they are making good progress to enable them to achieve their next steps.

Year 13 to further education

As a high achieving school, we present many opportunities for our students to take after Sixth Form including; university, apprenticeships and employment. Our SEND team will support students in ensuring student destinations are suitable for them and will help them to access support at new education providers or businesses where this is available.
For students going on to university you can use Student Space to see what support is available at the university you are going to:

With student and parent consent we can share student access arrangements with these providers too, to ensure that these remain in place.
